Daisy Horton, 1923.  The first police woman hired by the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Helen B. Johnston, 1931.  In the early days police women did not wear uniforms and most of their duties consisted of dealing with juvenile and female arrests. A lot of their duties were clerical and investigative in nature.

In the early 1940’s, the police women or "matrons" began wearing their own uniform.  Edith Gallup and Dorene Meyers  model their new uniforms in front of the Santa Barbara Police Department in 1943.

Geneve R. Lowry, 1961.  In the 1960’s, the police woman’s duties were increased to include those of their male counter parts, except the police woman’s badge still read Police Woman on it.

Brenda D'Orazio Cook, 1967.  Brenda Cook was one of the first police women to patrol in a car, just like the male officers, and her badge was eventually  changed to say Police Officer.


Today, our modern police women work side by side with the male officers wearing the same uniform and badge.
